The phenomenon of banning Bollywood and films is nothing new. But did you know that several films were massive hits in India but banned internationally? There are several strange reasons behind this. Some films were banned for obscenity and some were denied screening for being too progressive.
Here Take A Look Of The List Of The Films Banned In Abrode.
1. Padman
Akshay Kumar’s Padman, praised for questioning taboos around menstruation in India, was not well received in Pakistan. For some bizarre reason, the Federal Censor Board of Pakistan banned the film for its economically accessible sanitary napkin relationship for women. They mentioned that this film is against their culture and tradition.
2. Oh My God
The film received positive reviews for pushing boundaries in India and raising some real questions about bigotry, banned in many Middle-Eastern countries. It is not allowed to be screened for hurting the religious sentiments of people. Among these countries is UAE.
3. Tere Bin Laden
“Tere Bin Laden”, as the name suggests, this film was banned in Pakistan. It was based on the controversial story of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden who was killed in a US secret mission. This film became very popular in India.
4. Agent Vinod
The Saif Ali Khan starrer has found itself in the soup in Pakistan. The film was banned by the Pakistani Censor Board for maligning their country. The film depicts an agent trapped in Pakistan.
5. Baby
Akshay Kumar’s blockbuster was banned in Pakistan. That’s because the film was based on RAW and how they go on a secret mission to Dubai to catch a notorious Pakistani terrorist. The Pakistan Censor Board banned the film because they felt it was meant to malign Pakistan.
6. Raanjhana
Our neighboring countries seem always ready to ban our films. The movie which is basically a romantic story between two Benares teenagers has upset them. The Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush starrer follows a boy (Hindu) chasing a girl (Muslim) till his last breath. The film was a huge hit in India and no one had a problem with it (at least not a religious one). But Pakistan had a problem with Sonam Kapoor’s character who falls in love with two Hindu men. So the film was banned in Pakistan. Besides, the film was also banned in Dubai.
7. The Dirty Picture
“The Dirty Picture” won praise for the very talented actress Vidya Balan, but was banned in many other countries. The film was based on the real life of actress Silk Smitha, who ended her life while struggling with depression. The film was banned in Kuwait as they considered Vidya Balan’s character too bold for their audience. Vidya was seen in a very revealing outfit during a song scene in the film.
8. Dishoom
It is a film about the disappearance of an Indian batsman starring Varun Dhawan and John Abraham. This film was also not liked by the Pakistani Censor Board. They alleged that the film was shown to malign Pakistan.
9. Udta Punjab
The film also faced a lot of controversy for its title “Udta Punjab”. It was banned in Pakistan due to profanity in the film. In the opening scene, Punjabi youths are seen getting cocaine from their neighbors, who are mainly Pakistanis. Shahid Kapoor has done a great job in this film.
10. Neerja
Based on real life, Neerja showcases the life of air hostess Neerja Bhanot who sacrificed her life to save the passengers of a flight held hostage by Pakistani terrorists. This film was also banned in Pakistan.
