The Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken a big decision. The board has decided to abolish the impact player rule applicable in T20 cricket. The impact player rule will not be applicable in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. There was a demand to abolish this rule for a long time. Now the board has decided to remove it at least from Syed Mushtaq Ali, the biggest T20 league of domestic cricket.
Will continue in IPL
The BCCI has undoubtedly abolished the impact player rule from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but this rule will remain applicable in IPL 2025. The BCCI had recently issued rules related to IPL 2025, in which it was made clear that this rule will remain applicable in the next season of IPL as well.
There was a demand to abolish it.
After IPL 2024, many veteran cricketers including India captain Rohit Sharma and South Africa’s legendary batsman David Miller had appealed to abolish the impact player rule. Rohit Sharma had said that when this rule is not there in international cricket, then why in IPL? Also, many franchises had appealed to abolish this rule, but this rule has been approved by the board for the next season of IPL.

Why is there a demand to remove this rule?
BCCI invented the Impact Player Rule to make IPL exciting. This rule came into existence in 2022. It was introduced with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy itself, after which it was implemented in IPL. After 2023, opposition to this rule started which increased significantly in 2024. Under this rule, the bowling team can include a bowler in place of a batsman in the playing XI and the batting team can include a batsman in place of a bowler. This is making cricket exciting but is eliminating the role of the all-rounder. This is why this rule is being opposed.
