Record sales of Maruti, now the king of SUV segment

The country’s largest car company Maruti Suzuki sold 1,89,082 vehicles in August. Which is the highest monthly sales to date. Behind this is the strong sales of the SUV segment. Maruti’s SUV models such as the Grand Vitara, Brezza, and the Jimny have done impressive sales figures in the first five months of the financial year. Due to this, Maruti reached the top position in the domestic SUV segment in the April-August period. The company’s sales increased by 14 percent year-on-year to 1.89 lakh in August. While it sold 1,65,173 units in the same period a year ago.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) said in a statement that its total passenger vehicles domestic sales increased by 16 percent to 1,56,114 units from 1,34,166 units in August 2022. Maruti’s previous record for monthly sales was set in October 2020 when the company registered monthly sales of 1,82,448 units. He said that in the current financial year, we have become number one in the SUV segment by April-August. Sales of multi-utility vehicles such as Brezza, Ertiga, Frankx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, and XL6 doubled to 58,746 units in August from 26,932 units in August last year.

MSI senior executive officer (marketing and sales) Shashank Srivastava said the company has overtaken Mahindra & Mahindra to lead the SUV segment in the April-August period of the current financial year. The company’s SUV sales stood at 41,658 units in August, while Mahindra & Mahindra’s sales stood at 37,233 units in this segment.

Whereas the sales of small cars like Alto, and S-Presso declined to 12,209 units, which was 22,162 units in August 2022. The company sold 72,451 units of compact cars like Baleno, Celerio, Dezire, Ignis, and Swift as against 71,557 units in August 2022. According to MSIL, its exports in August stood at 24,614 units, which was 21,481 units in the same month last year.
