Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan is out of the World Cup. He injured his finger while batting against Sri Lanka, due to which he will miss the upcoming match against Australia, which is also Bangladesh’s last league match.
An X-ray after the game confirmed the fracture, which has ruled him out of the BAN vs AUS match in Pune on 11 November. National team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan gave more details about the injury.
“Shakib suffered a cut on his left finger at the start of his innings but he continued to bat with supportive tape and painkillers,” he said.
“He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed a fracture of the left PIP joint. Recovery is expected to take three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehabilitation.”
Crucial Competition for Champions Trophy 2025 Qualification
Bangladesh is already out of the race for the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023, but this match will be crucial for the qualification for the Champions Trophy 2025. The top 7 teams and host nation Pakistan will qualify for the Champions Trophy tournament to be played in 2025.
Bangladesh are currently placed 8th in the points table and a win against Australia will ensure their qualification for the ICC tournament. The Tigers’ already disappointing performance in the tournament was fraught with controversy. The latest incident was seen in the match against Sri Lanka on Monday, when after the team’s appeal, Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews was given ‘time out’ in the game.
