A huge portion of the under-construction tunnel between the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway collapsed on 12 November. 40 workers are still trapped inside the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand. But magic happened!! A camera has captured footage of the 41 workers trapped in a tunnel in India’s Uttarakhand state for the first time in nine days!!
Nine Days have passed! How are the workers?
There are serious concerns about the health of the workers due to their long stay inside the tunnel. On 12 November, a portion of the Silkyara Tunnel under construction collapsed, trapping 40 construction workers under the debris. Specialized rescue teams from Thailand and Norway, including the team that successfully rescued children trapped in a cave in Thailand in 2018, have joined to assist in the ongoing rescue operation.

At last, on the ninth day, a video was filmed using an endoscopic camera that was slipped inside a new pipe drilled into the tunnel on Monday. Rescuers used the pipe to give the workers their first hot meal in 9 days. So far, they had been living on snacks sent through a narrower pipe inserted earlier. Till now they were surviving on dry fruits, puffed rice, and chana.
“Ummeed jagi he,” one trapped worker’s wife said!
In the video, the workers, are seen receiving food items sent to them through the pipeline and talking to each other. “I could not see my husband in the video…Whenever I get to see my husband, then only I can say he is safe. But yes, hopes are high that they will be rescued soon. Ummeed jagi he,” said a trapped person’s wife.
The rescue operation witnessed a breakthrough after the rescuers were able to push a six-inch diameter pipe through the debris inside the tunnel. They slipped a small camera attached to a flexible cable into the pipe and used it to film the trapped men. That’s how they were able to contact the trapped workers. In a video released to the press, rescuers can be seen viewing the footage on a computer screen outside the tunnel.
Workers will also be later provided with mobiles and chargers that will be sent inside the tunnel through the 6-inch lifeline, rescue operation in-charge Colonel Deepak Patil had earlier said.
