8th march, women’s day : who declared, what is the purpose?
The history of International Women’s Day is quite interesting. A woman named Clara Zetkin, who was the Leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany had tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day back in 1910. Her proposal was that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day as a Women’s Day, this will help the women to press for their demands.
After this, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. But In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 8 as an official UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace. On March 8, 1857, New York City’s female textile workers marched in a protest because of unfair working conditions and unequal rights. This was one of the first organized strikes by working women. So, 8th March is celebrated as the INTERNATIONAL WORKING WOMEN’S DAY.
