A powerful explosion at an illegal firecracker warehouse near Deesa town in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district claimed 21 lives on Tuesday. The explosion completely destroyed the warehouse and caused a massive fire, killing the workers inside, many of whom were from Madhya Pradesh. The blast was so intense that body parts were found scattered as far as 200-300 meters away, and the building’s slabs collapsed, burying the victims under the debris.
Among the victims, there were several women and children. Police have identified five children, ranging in age from 3 to 12 years, who were among the deceased. The children were named Abhishek (3), Kiran (5), Rukma (6), Radha (10), and Krishna (12). Also among the dead were women workers, including Lakshmi Naik (50), Daliben Naik (25), Keserbhen Naik (40), Sunitaben Naik (19), and Guddibhen Naik (30).
At least six other people, including a 3-year-old girl named Naina, were injured in the explosion and are receiving treatment. The explosion was so powerful that parts of the warehouse were blown away, and some of the victims’ families who were living on the premises were also killed when the building collapsed.
The police arrested the warehouse owner, Deepak Mohanani, on Tuesday night. He was taken into custody by Banaskantha police, who tracked him down in a neighboring district. Deepak, along with his father Khoobchand, allegedly operated the illegal firecracker business that led to this deadly explosion.
Authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, with forensic teams working to determine the exact cause of the blast. Initial investigations suggest the warehouse was storing firecrackers illegally and lacked basic safety measures, which led to the disaster.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives and announced a financial aid of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also announced Rs 4 lakh for the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
The tragic event has shocked many, and calls for justice are growing, with politicians urging the government to conduct a thorough investigation and provide further support to the families of those affected.
