The agency has issued a tsunami warning. It predicted waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 ft) on the southern coast of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku. Operators of nuclear plants in Kyushu and Shikoku said they were investigating whether they had suffered any damage. Japan’s NHK public television said there were reports of broken windows at Miyazaki Airport, near the epicenter.

An order has also been given to review the damage caused by the earthquake.
