Earthquakes in Tibet | Strong earthquake hits Xizang area again, death toll in Tibet tragedy rises to 126!

Another earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale hit Tibet on Wednesday morning. According to the information, the earthquake occurred at around 06:58 am (IST) and its epicenter was in Shizang. The quake comes after a powerful 7.1-magnitude quake that killed 126 people and caused widespread devastation in Tibet. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 10 kilometers below the surface. Earthquake tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal, where the earthquake’s intensity was recorded at around 4.2 on the Richter scale.

Shigaze is located 90 kilometers north-east of Lobutse in the Khumbu Himalayan range in northeastern Nepal, and is Tibet’s last border town not far from the Nepal-Tibet-Indian tri-junction touching Sikkim. Shigaze, also known as Shigaste, is the second most influential Buddhist figure after the Dalai Lama.

More than 100 people died in severe earthquake

Earlier on Tuesday, a massive earthquake struck near one of the holiest cities in southern Tibet, killing at least 126 people and injuring 188. Due to the earthquake, people came out on the streets in many parts of Nepal and India. The China Earthquake Network Center (CENC) said the quake had a magnitude of 6.8, while the US Geological Service (USGS) put it at a magnitude 7.1. The earthquake struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) at 9:05 a.m. (Beijing time), with its epicenter in Tsogo Township of Dingri County, Xi’an city.

The Tibetan Plateau is considered vulnerable to severe earthquakes because it is located where the tectonic Eurasian and Indian plates meet, often colliding with great force. After Tuesday’s quake, China’s Ministry of Water Resources said inspections showed no impact on dams or reservoirs in the county, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.
