Rajendra Nagar Coaching Center accident: Death of 3 candidates due to flooded basement 

Due to rain on Saturday evening, the rainwater that filled the road in Old Rajendra Nagar suddenly filled the basement of the coaching center Rao IAS Study Circle located there. At that time 30-35 students were present in the library built in the basement.

Bout 35 boys and girls were studying in the library located in the basement of the coaching center Rao IAS Study Circle in the Old Rajendra Nagar area of the capital. Suddenly, around 6.30 pm on Saturday, the water came with such force that it seemed as if there was a flood. Before all the students could understand anything, the basement quickly filled with water and they got scared and started trying to save their lives by climbing on the table. Water was coming rapidly from the same side through which the students had to pass.

The coaching center management first tried to handle the situation itself, but when the situation became very serious, the police and fire brigade were informed. Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the accident.

Three days ago, a UPSC student died due to electrocution in waterlogging after rain in the Atel Nagar area. Ten days before that, a woman had died due to electrocution from an electric pole in Bhajanpura.

  • .According to Nakul, the last student to come out of the basement, due to heavy rain, water was coming very fast from the gate. We were having trouble climbing the stairs due to the high pressure of the air.
  • Eyewitnesses said that within five minutes the entire basement was filled with water up to the ceiling. The basement ceiling height is 12 feet. Within no time the place was filled with water like a flood. A rope was thrown to save us, but we could not see the ropes in the water.
  • According to DCP M Harsh Vardhan, who reached the spot, due to heavy rain in the evening, several feet of water had accumulated on the main road in front of the coaching center which started coming into the basement of the coaching center Meanwhile, due to the passing of a high-speed Thar, the basement gate broke due to the pressure, due to which water immediately started flowing into the basement. Water from a nearby sewer also started overflowing into the basement, due to which the water level increased rapidly.
  • Initially, the coaching center management tried to save the students themselves, but when they could not control the situation, the police and fire department were informed about the incident. As soon as the information was received, seven fire brigade vehicles reached the spot.
  • There was a lot of difficulty in the rescue work due to the darkness in the basement. Later NDRF was called. While water was being pumped out, NDRF divers entered the basement and started searching for the students. After about one and a half hours, the bodies of two girl students were found. Later the body of another student was found.

The NDRF team held the search operation after seven hours. During this period, the bodies of three students have been recovered.
