The Iconic Love Story That Almost Didn’t Happen: Would SRK Choose Kajal Over Gauri?

Some love stories are so iconic that they become timeless. We all have a favourite love story which seems like a fairy tale, for most Indians, it is Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s love story.

The man who taught romance to an entire generation worldwide has a love story that seems like straight out of a 90’s film. It has been almost three decades and yet they remain one of the most loved, admired, and talked about couples in Bollywood. Their love story will remain like this forever.

How did they meet?

Shah Rukh Khan first met Gauri in 1984, when he was 18 and Gauri was just 14.  He saw her at a party where she was dancing with her friend. That time, SRK was quite shy to ask for a dance, since she was already dancing with another guy. But gathered their courage and asked her if she’d dance with him Gauri turned him down, as she was waiting for her boyfriend but in reality, she was waiting for her brother only. SRK found out about this later and got a new lease on life and his chances with Gauri Khan.

The love story begins!

Their first date was at Delhi’s Panchshila Club. After their first date, the romance began, what can only be described as a classic scene out of a 90’s Bollywood movie. But no movie goes smoothly without any drama.

Gauri’s parents had their doubts about the interfaith relationship and didn’t approve of it. Gauri’s father was a strict vegetarian and they even had a temple inside their house. Not only that, her father also thought that they were far too young and immature to make such a big life decision. Finally, after overcoming all the problems, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan got married on October 25, 1991, at a Hindu wedding.

But the couple still kept struggling after marriage also, one spark said in an interview, “The struggle was just in the first few years of marriage. Gauri Khan was new to the film industry, and so was I.” …”I remember the first night when we came to Mumbai after about five seven days. She spent that evening fully dressed, she wore a chooda and Indian dress, and came to Film City and was there till 6 where Hema Ji was directing my film.”…”One of the actors got late as happened in the shoot and we wrapped by 8 instead of 6. There were no mobile phones, so I sent her a cab as I didn’t own a car and said, ‘Please come over and sit here because I am sorry, this has taken a little bit.”

But Their bond has grown with time. This strong couple has been married for 30 years now with 2 sina and 1 daughter and they have seen various phases of life together – struggle, success, failure; everything!
