On this February 17, 2024, Tamil Nadu government officially banned the sale of the famous sweet cotton candy. Tamil Nadu State health minister M Subramanian has also ordered food safety officers to take required measures and strict action on this matter. The food analysis has found out that this contains a serious cancer-causing chemical, named Rhodamine-B. Now, many will ask what is this chemical? Where it could be found? Which foods to avoid?
the compound Rhodamine-B can be found in various confectionaries as well as in cotton candy. This textile dye imparts a vibrant, fluorescent-tinted pink-to-red hue and is used extensively in textiles, inks, and cosmetics. This due is not good to consume. This harmful chemical is very toxic for humans and can cause cancer. After Tamilnadu a similar order is issued for Puducherry too. The Lieutenant Governor has said to the officials to inspect shops selling cotton candy and undertake seizures if Rhodamine-B is found in their products. She also warned people against giving “food items having colour additives” to children.
“The use of Rhodamine B in food for a long time leads to liver dysfunction or cancer, and when exposed to large amounts over a short period, it results in acute poisoning,” a research paper available on the site says. The harmful chemical can be irritating for the nose and throat if inhaled. Contact with this can irritate and burn the skin and eyes with possible chance of eye damage. Being exposed to Rhodamine-B, which is also known as CI Food Red 15, can cause headache, nausea and vomiting.
