Andy Flower is all set to take over as Royal Challengers Bangalore coach. RCB director Mike Hesson, whose tenure with the franchise ends on August 31. The remaining members of the RCB support staff led by Hesson, along with head coach Sanjay Bangar are also expected to depart.
This was revealed in a report dated July 18 published by Cricbuzz. It was reported that Flower was in talks with several franchises, including the Rajasthan Royals. However, it has since become clear that the Bengaluru-based team has secured his services for the coming years. AB de Villiers, who has contributed immensely to the franchise’s success, is likely to collaborate with Flower as a mentor, though no official confirmation has been made yet. And the franchise has not given any update on this matter.
After IPL 2023, Flower’s two-year contract with Lucknow Supergiants expired earlier this year. The Sanjeev Goenka-owned team has already made Justin Langer their head coach
Flower’s involvement spans several T20 teams worldwide, including St. Lucia Zoos in the CPL (2020), Multan Sultans in the PSL (2021), and Gulf Giants in the ILT-20 (2023). Additionally, he served as a consultant to the Australian team’s coaching staff during the recently concluded Ashes series. In fact, he was part of the Aussies’ dressing room in the last three Ashes Tests.
Hesson’s association with RCB began in 2019, during which the team qualified for the playoffs for three consecutive years. And since then, the phase of change begins. Virat Kohli resigned from the post of captain. Faf du Plessis joins as the new captain. RCB failed to clear the fence of the playoffs despite playing brilliantly under his captaincy.
