Australia is facing a shortage of players and may be forced to field support staff members as replacements in the practice matches of next month’s ICC tournament due to the short time between the IPL and the T20 World Cup.
Australia will play 2 warm-up matches against Namibia on Wednesday (May 29) and West Indies in Trinidad on Friday (May 31). Still, they may have only 8 players available for the 2 matches as most of them will be away after the break after playing in the IPL playoffs.
Everything You Need To Know About Team Australia
Captain Mitchell Marsh, who is recovering from a leg muscle injury, is also not sure to play against Namibia. He told ‘cricket.com.au’, “We will be short of players. But this is a practice match. The players who need to play will play and we will decide from there.
The IPL final was played on Sunday (26 May) night between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad in which Australia’s Travis Head, Pat Cummins, and best player of the match Mitchell Marsh played.
Apart from these three, Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, will join the World Cup team in Barbados only later this week, while Marcus Stoinis, playing for Lucknow Super Giants, will also join the team only after the practice match against Namibia. Expected to reach Trinidad.
Reserve players Jack Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short will also join the team after Australia’s first T20 World Cup match against Oman on June 5. According to ICC rules, players taking the field in practice matches should be from the same country they represent. This means support staff like Andrew McDonald, Brad Hodge, George Bailey (all former international cricketers), and Andre Borovec (former first-class wicketkeeper) may have to take the field.
