Babar Azam quit the captaincy of the Pakistan cricket team after the team’s poor performance in the 2023 World Cup. On November 15, Babar stated on Wednesday and announced his decision to step down from the captaincy of the team in all formats. Babar Azam was named the captain of the Pakistani team for the first time in 2019 and in 2021 he captained all three formats.
Babar wrote in his post on X, ‘I remember well the moment when I got a call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. In the last four years, I have seen many ups and downs on and off the field. But with all my heart and full dedication, I aimed to maintain the pride of Pakistan in the cricket world.
He further wrote, ‘Reaching the number-1 position in white ball cricket was the result of the collective efforts of the players, coaches and management. I would like to express my gratitude to Pakistani cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey.
Babar said, ‘Today I am leaving the captaincy of the Pakistan team in all three formats. This is a difficult decision but I think this is the right time to take it. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. The new captain and the team will have my full support. I am also grateful to the Pakistan Cricket Board for giving me this important responsibility.
Let us tell you that Babar Azam has captained the Pakistan team in 134 international matches so far. During this period, 78 matches have been won. While 44 matches have been lost. Babar is the second most successful Pakistani captain after 1992 World Cup winner Imran Khan.
