Bangladesh on Tuesday announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 to be held in India from October 5. Shakib Al Hasan will lead the team, while experienced opener Tamim Iqbal has been out of the team after several controversies in the last few months. Bangladesh will start its campaign in the World Cup by playing against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on 7 October.
A total of 10 teams will participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. India, South Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Bangladesh qualified based on the Cricket World Cup Super League standings, while Sri Lanka and the Netherlands qualified for the event after the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Before the squad was announced, reports emerged in the Bangladesh media claiming that Shakib Al Hasan threatened to step down from captaincy and not participate in the tournament if half-fit players were selected.
Shakib was talking about Tamim Iqbal, who had informed BCB that he would not be able to play more than 5 matches due to his fitness problems. Finally, the decision was taken by BCB to drop Tamim Iqbal from the team.
