There is suspense over whether MS Dhoni will participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 or not. Former Team India captain Dhoni played his last international match in 2019 and it has been five years since he played for Team India. One rule that has been re-introduced regarding the retention policy of players for IPL 2025 is the uncapped rule.
According to this rule, if a player has not played international cricket for five years and has also retired, then the franchise team can retain him as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kashi Vishwanathan has given his point of view on this. He said that it is not even certain whether CSK will use this rule for Dhoni or not.
According to the Times of India, Kashi Vishwanathan said, ‘We cannot say anything at this stage right now. We may not use this rule for Dhoni. It would be too early to say anything about this because we have not discussed it yet. He further said, ‘Dhoni was in America, and till now we have not had any conversation about it. Now I am traveling this week. So maybe there will be some talks in the coming week. So then some clarity can come about this.’
He said, ‘We hope that Dhoni will play, but Dhoni himself will decide whether he will play in IPL 2025 or not.’ Dhoni is the most successful captain in IPL history, under whose captaincy Chennai Super Kings have won five titles. Dhoni made CSK the champion in IPL 2023 under his captaincy, after which in 2024 he left the captaincy just before the start of the season and handed over the command of the team to Rituraj Gaikwad.
