The ODI World Cup 2023 has started on Thursday. The first match is between defending champions England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first. Batting first, England started well but after losing several wickets in a row, England failed to score big runs. After losing the toss, Two England openers, David Malan and Jonny Bairstow, started batting in the mood. However, England lost consecutive wickets after breaking the opening pair. At one time, it seemed that England would easily cross 300 runs on this day. But it didn’t really happen.
England scored 282 runs off 9 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs. Joe Root scored 77 runs for England. No other batsman could reach 50 runs except him. Captain Jos Buttler scored 43 runs. Jonny Bairstow scored 33, Harry Brook 25 and Liam Livingstone scored 20 runs. Adil Rashid made 15 not out, and David Malan and Sam Curran scored 14 each. Mark Wood scored 13 not out, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes scored 11 runs.
The New Zealand bowlers did not allow England’s explosive batsmen to play freely in the match. The combination of pace and spin caused the English team trouble. Fast bowler Matt Henry took the maximum three wickets. Spinners Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips got two hits each. Trent Boult and Rachin Ravindra took one wicket each. All in all, the Kiwi bowlers showed a great bowling performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
