Disney Hotstar preparing to close its business in India. Disney faced the loss of 12.5 million paid subscribers from Disney+ Hotstar during the third quarter ending on July 1, 2023.
This drop is the largest ever loss since the company started disclosing its paid member counting. the recent quarter revealed approximately a 512 million dollar loss in every Disney streaming division. Disney also witnessed a huge drop in subscribers ( approximately 11.7 million) worldwide. The primary reason for this loss is because of the loss of streaming rights for the IPL Cricket tournament in India. The number of paid members increased to 40.4 million during the quarter and reduced by 24% before the previous quarter. Disney reported a net loss of $460 million, but shares rose by 2.5%. The loss in subscribers was mainly because of its Indian business and the loss of streaming rights for the Indian Premier League.
Disney was shaping the long-term international streaming strategy. CEO Bob Iger was quoted as saying, “We have been looking at multiple markets around the world to prioritize those that are going to help us turn this business into a profitable business. What that means is there are some markets that we will invest less in local programming but still maintain the service.” While terming the near-term environment as ‘challenging’, he said, “I returned to Disney in November, and I’ve agreed to stay on longer because there was more to accomplish before our transformation is complete.” Iger took back his role as the CEO of Disney in November last year. He has been working on turning around the company’s streaming business since then and he ensured that the financial situation won’t get worse. Disney has announced that Iger will continue to remain CEO of The Walt Disney Co. till 2026 after he agreed to a two-year contract extension.
