Match fixing in cricket is not going to end. The ghost of fixing has come out in cricket once again. The latest case is related to the famous T10 League in which the Indian owner of the franchise has been arrested. This case has come to light in India’s neighboring country Sri Lanka. A team of Sri Lanka’s T10 League ‘Lanka T10 Super League’ has been accused of match-fixing. In this case, the police have arrested Prem Thakur, the Indian owner of the ‘Lanka T10 Super League’ team Galle Marvels, on charges of match-fixing.
According to ‘ESPNcricinfo’, Thakur was arrested on Thursday, a day after the tournament started, and produced in a local court. The report said that Indian citizen Thakur has been arrested by the Sri Lanka ‘Sports Police Unit’ under the Prevention of Sports-Related Offenses Act 2019. He was arrested from a hotel in Kandy. The Lanka T10 tournament is being organized in this city.
According to the report, it is understood that a foreign player was informed about the fixing attempt made by Thakur. Like the LPL earlier this year, a representative of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit is also in the country to oversee the tournament at the request of Sri Lanka Cricket. According to this, Lanka T10 Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwella has confirmed that the tournament will ‘proceed as scheduled’.
This is the second franchise tournament in Sri Lanka this year in which a team owner has been arrested under the country’s Sports Anti-Corruption Ordinance. Tamim Rahman, co-owner of LPL franchise Dambulla Thunders, was arrested in May on charges of match-fixing. Recently, 3 South African players were also arrested in the 8-year-old match-fixing scandal. These three players are accused of being involved in match-fixing in the T20 Ram Slam Challenge tournament in 2015-16.
