Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have requested to retain as many players as possible for the next three seasons. This was already being anticipated. Although all the 10 franchises have different opinions, but most of the teams want retention of more players as compared to the last season. In 2021, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allowed franchises to retain a maximum of four players.
Actually, BCCI has started the process of finalizing the retention policy for the mega auction to be held before IPL 2025. A final decision may be taken in the owners’ meeting at the end of this month. At present some owners are busy with their family matters, this meeting will be held as soon as everyone is available.
BCCI acting CEO and IPL in-charge Hemang Amin recently consulted with the franchise CEOs to get their views on the policy and salary cap for the next three years. Mega auction is to be held at the end of this year. In such a situation, opinion was also sought on the use of Right to Match (RTM) cards, which were not used in 2021.
Most franchisees request five to seven retentions. One team even suggested eight players. On the contrary, there are some teams which do not want retention of even a single player. The CEO was also consulted regarding the teams’ purses and everyone had different opinions. It is believed that the salary limit could be between Rs 110-120 crore, but an increase of Rs 20 crore cannot be ruled out. At present this limit is Rs 100 crore.
