Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Sunday said that T20 World Champion team captain Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India in ODI and Test cricket. He also expressed confidence that India will win next year’s Champions Trophy and World Test Championship (WTC) under his captaincy. Rohit, who became the third Indian captain to win the ICC trophy after Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket.
Shah said in a video message that the next step is the WTC Final and Champions Trophy. I have full faith in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy that we will become champions in both these tournaments. The Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan next year will be organized after 8 years (since 2017 in Britain). The draft schedule of this tournament has been submitted to the ICC but the BCCI has not yet given it the green signal. It is understood that the BCCI will insist on implementing the ‘hybrid model’ like the 2023 ODI Asia Cup. Under this model, India played all its matches in Sri Lanka, including the match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.
Shah’s message has put an end to the speculations about whether Rohit will leave the role of captain in other formats. Unless Rohit leaves the captaincy, India will once again have two captains in different formats. Rohit will continue to lead in ODIs and Tests, while Hardik Pandya is expected to take over the captaincy in the T20 format. Under Rohit’s leadership, India also made it to the finals of the WTC and ODI World Cup last year. India lost to Australia in the ODI World Cup final after winning 10 matches in a row.
Shah dedicated India’s victory in the T20 World Cup to the three cricketers who retired after winning the title and outgoing coach Rahul Dravid. He said, “I wanted to dedicate this victory to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.” The BCCI secretary also said, “This was our third final in the last year. We lost in the WTC final in June 2023. In November 2023, we won hearts with 10 wins but could not win the title. I had said in Rajkot that we would win hearts as well as the cup in June 2024 and would wave our national flag, and our captain would wave the Indian flag”.
Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja are expected to return in the ODI series against Sri Lanka in August. India will play six ODIs before the Champions Trophy, out of which three will be played against Sri Lanka on its soil while the three-match series against England will be played on home soil in early February.
