New Zealand cricket has suffered a huge blow amid the World Cup being played in India. Captain Kane Williamson, who returned from injury, is injured again. In Friday’s match against Bangladesh in Chennai, Kane’s thumb was injured after being hit by a throw while running between the wickets. After this, an X-ray confirmed a fracture in Kane Williamson’s left thumb. In such a situation, Tom Blundell has been called to India as cover.
Williamson will remain in the World Cup squad to be available for the pool stage matches next month. Wellington Firebirds batsman Tom Blundell will travel to India as cover, but will not be officially part of the squad.
Coach Gary Stead said that he is hopeful that Williamson will still participate in the tournament. Stead said, “First of all, we all feel for Kane after his hard work to return from a knee injury. Although this is disappointing news, we are still hopeful that he can play for us in the upcoming matches.”
He said, “Kane is a big part of our team and is a world-class player and captain – so we will give him every possible opportunity to return to the tournament.”
Stead said Blundell’s versatility led to him being selected to join the team as cover for Henry after suffering a mild side strain during Otago and Canterbury’s Plunket Shield warm-up match this week. Nichols was not considered.
