Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the head coach of Punjab Kings. Ponting signed a multi-year contract with Punjab Kings franchise. Ponting will have the upper hand on the rest of the coaching staff. It is not yet sure which member from the last year’s coaching unit will remain on the book. As it has been said, Ponting will join Trevor Bayliss, Sanjay Bangar (Head of Cricket Developments), Charl Langveldt (Fast-bowling coach) and Sunil Joshi (Spin-bowling coach).
Ponting will be the third head coach in four seasons at Punjab, who finished ninth in the last season of the IPL. The team has not qualified for the IPL playoffs since 2014. In 2014 they finished as runners-up. As the head coach of the franchise, Ponting’s first challenge would be shortlisting players who could be potentially retained for the next season even as the franchises wait for the IPL to finalise the retention rules.
Ponting has been part of the IPL set-up since the inauguration of IPL in 2008. He started his IPL journey as a player at Kolkata Knight Riders and then joined Mumbai Indians where he stepped down as captain midway through the 2013 season. Mumbai won the title the same year, with Ponting continuing in an advisory role in 2014 and then serving as head coach for two seasons in 2015 and 2016. After he joined DC in 2018 and now parting ways from the franchise by joining PBKS.
