After leading India to their third Champions Trophy title on Sunday, March 9, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, addressed the growing retirement rumors surrounding him. With the buzz about his possible retirement post-2025 Champions Trophy gaining momentum, Rohit firmly declared that he is “not retiring from this format” anytime soon. He made it clear that he has no plans to step away from the game just yet.
Rohit Keeps His Future Open, Eyes on the Present
Although speculation about his future in international cricket continues, Rohit remains cautious about what lies ahead. Reflecting on the possibility of participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup, he admitted, “It’s very hard to say that right now.” Despite turning 38 next month, the Indian skipper emphasized that he’s focused on the present and is “keeping all my options open.”
At the moment, Rohit is thoroughly enjoying his cricket, saying, “Right now, I’m playing really, really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team.” He added that the entire team is enjoying his leadership and company, which further fuels his passion for the game.
Rohit’s Commitment to the Team: “As Long as I’m Needed, I’ll Be Here”
When asked about his future, Rohit explained that he would continue playing as long as he feels both “enjoyment” and “a sense of purpose” with the team. “As long as I’m enjoying the sport, I’m enjoying playing the game, doing what I’m doing for this team, I will continue to play,” he affirmed. For him, the joy and pride in representing India, especially with this current squad, keep him motivated to keep going.
Rohit has already etched his name in history as only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to secure two ICC titles. His leadership guided India to the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph before clinching the Champions Trophy win, their first in 12 years. The captain played a pivotal role in the final, scoring a crucial 76 off 83 balls, and was awarded Player of the Match for his performance. With India’s victory over New Zealand, Rohit’s captaincy continues to shine brightly, ensuring his place in Indian cricket history.
