Sri Lanka has announced its 15-player squad for the World Cup 2023. Injured Wanindu Hasaranga, Mahish Tikshina, and Dilshan Madushanka have been selected. All three players are not fully fit yet. Despite this, he has got a place. Dasun Shanaka will captain the team in the World Cup. Kusal Mendis has been given the responsibility of vice-captain.
Sri Lanka got a direct qualification for the ICC World Cup 2023. They participated in the qualifier tournament to earn a spot in the tournament. Sri Lanka defeated every team in the tournament and won the final to qualify for the World Cup.
In the last edition of the ICC World Cup, Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Out of 9 matches, Sri Lanka won 3 matches and lost 4. Whereas during this period two matches ended without any result. Therefore, Sri Lanka finished sixth in the points table which was not enough to secure a semi-final berth.
Sri Lanka has always been a strong team in the ODI World Cup. The team reached the finals of the World Cup in the 2007 and 2011 editions. In 1996, under the leadership of captain Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka won the ODI World Cup for the first time. Sri Lanka has one ODI World Cup title in its kitty. Now Sri Lanka will try to achieve its second ODI World Cup title in 2023.
Like every other team, Sri Lanka will also play 9 matches during the league stage of the ICC World Cup 2023. Dasun Shanaka and Co. will take on South Africa in their opening match.
