Sri Lanka’s Squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has been announced. All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been made the captain of the team. Wanindu Hasaranga has been captaining the team for the last several matches, as all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has left the captaincy. Wanindu Hasaranga is going to get a captaincy group, which will prove beneficial for him. Apart from former captain Dasun Shanaka, the team has ODI team captain Kusal Mendis and Test captain Dhananjay de Silva.
Sri Lanka’s team has been placed in Group D in the T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka’s team has to face South Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Netherlands in the group phase. The team will start its campaign on June 3. The first match of the former champion team is against South Africa. This match will be played in the same stadium in which India and Pakistan are to clash. This match will be no less than a litmus test for Wanindu Hasaranga, as he will be seen captaining an ICC tournament for the first time.
Hasaranga was appointed captain of Sri Lanka’s T20I team in December last year. Apart from this, middle-order batsman Charith Aslanka has been given the responsibility of vice-captain of the team for this mega event to be played in the West Indies and USA. Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews has also been included in the team, who returned to the T20 setup earlier this year after three years. This will be Mathews’ sixth T20 World Cup. He was also part of Sri Lanka’s victorious campaign in 2014.
