Wanindu Hasaranga on Thursday stepped down as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain ahead of the upcoming three-match series against India. India will tour Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series, starting with three T20I matches to be played at the Pallekele International Stadium on July 26, 27 and 29. After this, three ODIs will be played between the two teams in Colombo.
According to a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) release, “Sri Lanka Cricket would like to inform the people that the captain of the national men’s T20I team, Wanindu Hasaranga, has decided to resign from the captaincy.” The release also said, “Hasaranga has said that in the best interest of Sri Lanka cricket, he has decided to step down from the captaincy and remain in the team as a player.”

Hasaranga captained Sri Lanka in the recently concluded T20 World Cup in which the team failed to make it to the Super Eight stage. The statement quoted Hasranga as saying, “As a player, I will always do my best for Sri Lanka and as always, I will support and stand by my team and captain.”
SLC agrees it has accepted Hasranga’s resignation. SLC said, “Sri Lanka Cricket accepts his resignation and wishes to convey that Hasranga will continue to be an important player for us in our international cricket plans.”
