While there was a horrific train accident in the country today, there has also been a horrific landslide. The accident took place near Meppadi in Wayanad district of Kerala. Due to heavy rains, the mountains cracked and heavy debris came with water from above, under which people living in the foothills were buried. So far 12 people have died in the accident. 2 children are among the dead. More than 100 people are feared to be buried under the debris.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) confirmed the landslide. NDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations. 2 helicopters of the Indian Air Force are also carrying out rescue operations. Kannur Defense Security Corps teams are also present at the spot. The landslide occurred around 2 am when people were asleep. After this, debris came again around 4 am. 16 people have been rescued, who have been admitted to the hospital.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself is monitoring the rescue operation. He has instructed the police, administration, and hospital officials of the district to cooperate. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that there was heavy rain in Wayanad for the last 24 hours, due to which a landslide occurred this morning. Police and administration officials reached the spot as soon as the information about the accident was received.
NDRF teams have been deployed for rescue operations. Indian Air Force’s 2 helicopters MI-17 and ALH are rescuing people trapped in the debris. For emergencies, people can call helpline numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833. National Health Mission has also set up a control room at the accident site.
