In a dramatic move, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested Kannada actress Ranya Rao at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport after they uncovered 14.8 kg of gold hidden in her luggage. Ranya, who was arriving on a flight from Dubai late Monday night, had caught the attention of DRI officials due to her frequent trips abroad.
Suspicious Travel and Concealed Gold
The DRI had been keeping a close watch on Ranya because of her multiple visits to Dubai, with four trips in just 15 days. Upon her arrival, they intercepted her and discovered the gold hidden discreetly under her clothes, along with gold bars tucked away. Officials stated that she tried to conceal the precious metal in a way that was hard to detect.
Family Connections and Investigation into Possible Inside Help
Ranya, who is the daughter of a senior IPS officer holding the rank of DGP in Karnataka, allegedly used her connections to claim special treatment. She would often mention her father’s position to local police officers, who would reportedly help escort her home after her trips. This has raised questions among the DRI investigators, who are now looking into whether local law enforcement officers were knowingly involved or were possibly duped by Ranya’s claims.
High-Profile Arrest and Interrogation
Ranya is known for her role in the Kannada movie Maanikya, where she starred alongside popular actor Sudeep, and has appeared in various South Indian films. After her arrest, she was taken to the DRI office in Bengaluru for further questioning. She was later presented in court and placed under judicial custody for 14 days as the investigation continues.
The case has raised eyebrows, and authorities are digging deeper to uncover any possible links to larger smuggling operations or if Ranya was acting alone.
