Sanjay Roy, convicted in the Kolkata rape-murder case, will be sentenced today after a CBI court found him guilty on January 18. He was convicted for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The case led to protests and outrage across the country.
The court charged Roy with rape, causing death, and murder. The sentence will be announced today.
There is heavy security outside the Sealdah court as Roy prepares to be sentenced. The police have deployed a large number of personnel, including several senior officers and women police officers.
The minimum punishment for the charges includes at least 10 years in prison, which could go up to a life sentence, or even the death penalty.
The court stated that after reviewing all evidence and hearing the arguments, Roy was found guilty and must be punished.
Roy denied the charges and claimed he was being framed. He said that if he had committed the crime, his rudraksha chain would have been broken, and questioned why some people involved in framing him were not facing punishment.
The victim’s parents, who were present in court, became emotional after hearing the verdict. The victim’s father expressed gratitude for the justice served.
