The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has now started taking action after the accident in Old Rajendra Nagar. In this, action is being taken against coaching centers violating the rules. In this sequence, so far 13 coaching centers running in basements at different places in Delhi have been sealed. In this regard, an official said that the establishments operating illegally in the ‘basement’ have been identified and action has been started against them. He said that the MCD had surveyed such coaching centers after a massive fire in an institute in Mukherjee Nagar last year.
An official said, “We have started action against the coaching centers being run in violation of the building bylaws of the MCD. Action will be taken against those who misuse the basement to conduct commercial activities. He said, “Gross criminal negligence has been found on the part of the owner of the institute in ensuring security measures, as the library located in the basement was being run illegally and it had only one entry and exit point which was biometric-based and was closed due to water.”
The official said, “If the exit was open, the students could have been saved. The MCD only approves the building plan, but if someone uses the basement for commercial activities after announcing to use it for parking and storage, then what else can the agency do to ensure security?”
At the same time, another official said, “Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi has held a meeting with officials in this regard and after talking to the Delhi government, the formation of a high-level committee will be announced soon.”
