Pakistan has temporarily blocked access to every possible popular social media platform with immediate effect! The social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube got banned, although it’s just temporarily! The action was taken before a “virtual jalsa” was organized by supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which is led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
According to the internet monitor Netblocks, a nationwide disruption in social media platforms occurred on Sunday night in Pakistan. This incident is coinciding with the PTI’s online event. The “virtual power show” was kicked off at 9 pm and the Netblocks described the incident as a “nation-scale disruption”. This happened on several social media platforms including X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Reports are saying that people have been accessing social media platforms in major cities such as Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad with huge difficulty, after 8 pm local time. Users also said that they were frustrated with the slow internet services during the disruption. This disruption makes Pakistan the third country to impose internet restrictions secretly. Pakistan was recently ranked third globally for imposing internet restrictions in the first half of 2023.
“Additionally, total internet shutdowns have been observed in some regions, this restricts people’s access to information and freedom of expression. We call upon the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority and Interior Ministry to immediately reverse this ban. ” has said NetBlocks, who are the global internet monitor.
