Accused Sanjay Roy has been convicted in the murder case of rape and murder of a trainee female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The special court of Sealdah court declared him guilty.
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah Court convicted the accused civic volunteer. The court will give its verdict on January 20. The verdict will be pronounced 59 days after the start of the trial in the case. The hearing of this case started on 11 November. The CBI, which is investigating this incident on the instructions of the High Court, had already filed a charge sheet in the case.
On August 9 last year, the body of the victim was recovered from the seminar hall of the fourth floor of the emergency department of RG Kar Hospital. The main accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Rai, was arrested the next day of the incident. He was seen entering the seminar hall in the CCTV footage. His headphones were also found from the spot.CBI has said in the charge sheet that Sanjay Rai is the main accused.
However, the victim’s parents told the court that more than one person could have been involved in the incident. He alleged that the investigation is half-baked as other people involved in the crime are roaming freely. The Central Investigation Agency has demanded death sentence for the main accused Sanjay Rai. He also told the court that Rai was the only culprit of this crime.
The incident sparked outrage across the country and hundreds of people, mainly doctors and medical workers, staged a prolonged protest.
