The noise level during singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s concert on Saturday exceeded the prescribed limit, the Chandigarh administration told the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday. The administration told the court that “strict action” has been recommended against the violators.
The high court had given permission for Dosanjh’s event scheduled for the evening of December 13, while directing that the organizers follow the noise pollution rules. While allowing the event on Friday, a division bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Khetrapal directed that the ambient air quality standards for sound be strictly maintained.
Recently, a PIL was filed by a Chandigarh resident, requesting directions to the Union Territory administration on the management of public events, including measures related to noise pollution and crowd control, at the Sector 34 Exhibition Ground. When the administration was asked to file a status report, its standing counsel filed an affidavit before the high court in the matter.
It mentioned that acting on the directions of the high court, the Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner constituted a committee, and noise was monitored throughout the concert. The Chandigarh Administration’s affidavit said, “During the concert of artist Diljit Dosanjh held on 14.10.2024, the sound levels were monitored at various locations and it was found that it exceeded the limits prescribed under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.”
“Accordingly, action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 has been proposed vide letter dated 16.12.2024,” the affidavit said. Dosanjh’s concert was held here on Saturday evening. The singer had kicked off the India leg of his Dil-Luminati tour from Delhi in October.
