Tension spread during Ganesh Utsav late on Sunday night when some people pelted stones at a Ganesh pandal in Surat district of Gujarat. According to the information, the incident took place in Sayyadpura area. Police have arrested six people involved in the stone pelting incident. A huge crowd also came out on the streets in protest against stone pelting.
As the matter escalated, the police had to resort to lathicharge to control the crowd. Meanwhile, Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said some children pelted stones at the Ganesh pandal, leading to the clash.
The police commissioner said, “Police immediately removed those children from the spot and deployed officers in the area. Lathicharge was carried out in all areas where it was needed and tear gas was used… All the accused who disturb the peace are being arrested. Around 1,000 policemen are deployed all around.”
What did Gujarat Home Minister say?
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Shanghvi confirmed that an incident of stone pelting took place at a Ganesh pandal in Syedpura area. According to him, six people were directly involved in stone pelting and they have been arrested by the police. Additionally, he said authorities have arrested 27 other people who were allegedly involved in encouraging and instigating the act.
