India’s drug regulator has declared 53 drugs, including calcium and vitamin D3 supplements, anti-diabetes pills, and high blood pressure medicines, as failing quality tests. These also include medicines from many renowned companies. Central Drugs Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) has found that more than 50 medicines are of poor quality.
CDSCO has included the names of 53 medicines in its new Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) alert list. State drug officers conduct random sampling every month and based on that NSQ alerts are issued. The medicines that have failed the quality test include many famous medicines like Vitamin C and D3 tablets Shelcal, Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C soft gel, antacid Pan-D, Paracetamol tablet IP 500 mg, diabetes medicine Glimepiride, high blood pressure medicine Telmisartan. Medicines are included. These medicines are manufactured by companies like Hetero Drugs, Alkem Laboratories, Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL), Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Meg Lifesciences, and Pure & Cure Healthcare.
Metronidazole, a drug used to treat stomach infections, also failed the quality test. It is manufactured by PSU Hindustan Antibiotic Limited (HAL). High blood pressure drug Telmisartan also was unable to pass the test. Shelcal, distributed by Torrent Pharmaceuticals and manufactured by Uttarakhand-based Pure & Cure Healthcare, also failed the test.
