The Australia Cricket Board on May 1 announced its 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup starting in June 2024. Australia dropped Steve Smith from the men’s World Cup squad for the first time in a decade, while Jake Fraser-McGurk also failed to make it to the flight to the Caribbean.
The team includes Ashton Agar and Cameron Green. Cricket Australia selected this Western Australian pair despite being absent from international T20 cricket for almost 18 months. Mitchell Marsh has led the T20 team on an interim basis for the last 12 months and has been formally appointed captain for his second men’s T20 title.
Steve Smith has represented Australia in all the World Cups played after 2014. Australia won the 2015 (ODI), 2023 (ODI) and 2021 (T20) World Cups while he was in the team. He has played only one T20 match since the 2022 T20 World Cup. Cricket Australia replaced Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Tim David in the middle order in his place. Smith also remained unsold in the IPL, after which he is doing commentary in this league.
Ashton Agar and Cameron Green were selected for the T20 World Cup when both players were out of Australia’s T20 squad for the last 18 months. Meanwhile, Marsh was made the interim captain of the team for the last few series, but when the squad was announced on Wednesday, Marsh was selected as the team’s captain for the World Cup. On becoming the captain, Marsh said that it is a great privilege for me to play for my country and now it is an even bigger honor to lead the team in the World Cup. We have had some strong success in recent times and I hope it continues like this.
Mitchell Marsh (Captain), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
