BIMSTEC Summit 2025: India’s Active Role in Strengthening Regional Ties

The 6th BIMSTEC Summit, held from April 2 to 4, 2025, in Bangkok, was a significant event for fostering cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi representing India, the summit saw a focus on enhancing economic, digital, and cultural collaborations among member countries. India’s participation not only emphasized its leadership role in the region but also highlighted its commitment to shaping the future of regional cooperation.

India’s Push for Digital and Economic Integration

During his address, Prime Minister Modi proposed a groundbreaking idea to integrate India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the payment systems of other BIMSTEC nations. This move aims to streamline financial transactions across the region, making trade and tourism much smoother. Additionally, Modi suggested the establishment of a BIMSTEC Business Advisory Council, which would help facilitate business collaborations, increase regional competitiveness, and attract investments. These proposals are expected to strengthen the economic ties between BIMSTEC countries and provide a solid foundation for long-term growth.

Bilateral Diplomacy: Strengthening Relations with Neighbors

In addition to discussing regional cooperation, PM Modi used the summit as an opportunity to engage in crucial bilateral talks. He met with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, offering condolences and discussing joint disaster relief efforts after a devastating earthquake hit Myanmar. This meeting underscored India’s readiness to help its neighbors in times of crisis. Modi also had a breakthrough conversation with Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, marking the first direct dialogue since tensions rose between the two countries in 2024. The outcome of this meeting is expected to pave the way for smoother diplomatic relations and renewed cooperation between India and Bangladesh.

Looking Ahead: The Future of BIMSTEC Cooperation

The summit, guided by the “Bangkok Vision 2030,” was centered around themes of prosperity, resilience, and enhanced openness. Leaders discussed critical regional challenges such as disaster management, economic integration, and digital connectivity. India’s proposals, particularly in the realms of digital payments and business collaboration, have the potential to reshape the region’s economic landscape. Moreover, India also extended an invitation to host the BIMSTEC Athletics Meet later this year and the first-ever BIMSTEC Games in 2027, signaling India’s commitment to fostering cultural ties and people-to-people interactions.

The 2025 BIMSTEC Summit reaffirmed India’s central role in driving regional stability and growth. With initiatives aimed at improving economic integration, digital connectivity, and cultural exchanges, India is working towards a more interconnected and prosperous Bay of Bengal region. The outcomes of this summit are likely to have a lasting impact on the future of BIMSTEC cooperation, strengthening India’s leadership in shaping a unified regional community.
