India re-recorded almost 614 new coronavirus infections! This number is the highest since May 21. The active cases have almost increased to 2311, as the Union Health Ministry data was updated last Wednesday. The death toll was recorded at 533,321 with three deaths. These were reported from Kerala in just 24 hours.
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (Insacog) is a network of laboratories set up to monitor genomic variations of the coronavirus. This has till now found a total number of 21 cases of infection with the JN.1 subvariant. The World Health Organization WHO has declared this variant as a “variant of interest”. Twenty cases with this JN.1 strain were found in Goa and one in Kerala. The Kerala case was detected first in the country, on December 8. This dominant is the cause of the infections of the XBB subvariant of Omicron.
Dr. VK Paul, who is a member of Niti Aayog has said, “Covid is not over yet. The current outbreak has not changed the severity of the disease. It’s not a serious disease, with more than 90% of people recovering at home”. Although the number of active Covid cases in India is way less than the global scenario. But there has been a sudden rise in those cases in the last two weeks. It was 115 on December 6, then it suddenly increased to 614 on Wednesday, according to Dr. VK Paul.
Patients infected with the Jn.1 subvariant also seemed to have a mild illness, just like Omicron. Hospitalization may not be necessary in most of the cases. However, like Omicran, its infection can also spread very quickly. According to the World Health Organisation, there is a concern about this subvariant. But they also announced that there are health risks, but the good news is it is not as deadly as the early variants of the coronavirus were.
