Journalist Soumya Vishwanathan’s Killers Handed Life Sentence by Delhi Court

Delhi’s Saket court sentenced four people to life imprisonment for the murder of Delhi journalist Soumya Viswanathan. During police interrogation, the accused said that they had murdered Soumya Viswanathan merely as a ‘thrilling activity’. Soumya was murdered on September 30, 2008. He was attacked late at night on his way home from work. The fifth convict in the case has already completed his sentence.

Four accused,d Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Balbir Malik, and  Ajay Kumar have been fined Rs 25 thousand and Rs 1 lakh in two different sectors. The court fined the fifth criminal Ajay Shetty 7.5 lakh rupees. 7.2 lakhs of this money will be given to the family of the deceased Soumya. The court ordered the remaining four convicts to pay an additional 1.2 lakh rupees.

In this case, the court has sentenced four people Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Ajay Kuma,r and Baljeet Malik to life imprisonment, finding them guilty of murder, while for one accused Ajay Sethi, the time spent in jail till now is equivalent to punishment. It is accepted. The court said that since the crime was not the ‘rarest of the rare’, the culprits were given life imprisonment without hanging.

Ravi Kapoor had shot with a country-made pistol!

There was a lot of uproar regarding this murder. The issue of the murder of a journalist a big channel in public on the road in the national capital became very hot. The prosecution had proved that Ravi Kapoo chased the car of the deceased journalist on Nelson Mandela Road. He stopped it to rob it and then shot him with a country-made pistol. when Delhi Police started an investigation, the secret of the murder was revealed through CCTV footage. After the arrest of Ravi Kapoor and Amit Shukla, the real secret of Saumya’s murder was revealed.

During the verdict, the court said, “It is very unfortunate that a young, energetic,c and hard-working journalist like Soumya has lost her life. One of the reasons why women’s work participation in India is declining is because women are discriminated against when they go out and come back from work.”
