Karpoori Thakur, who is the Former Bihar chief minister and socialist leader has award the Bharat Ratna Award! Karpoori has stayed active for the rights of marginalised communities, including scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other backward classes. The former Bihar CM had committed to social justice and inclusive development and this was the only key of aspects of his political ideology.
The Bharat Ratna is the country’s highest civilian award. This year, socialist leader and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur has been given this award, according to PM Narendra Modi’s post. “I am delighted that the Government of India has decided to confer the Bharat Ratna on the beacon of social justice, the great Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji and that too at a time when we are marking his birth centenary,” PM Modi wrote on X .
The current CM of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has also tweeted about this news. He has wrote, “This is a good decision by the Central Government. We have always demanded Bharat Ratna for the late Karpoori Thakur. That long-pending demand is fulfilled today.”
Karpoori Thakur was a freedom fighter and he was also got imprisoned for his participation in the “Bharat Charo Andolan” against the British in 1924. He was born in a small village in Bihar’s Samstipur district. He was known as ‘Jan Nayak’ back in his time. Karpoori thakur served as Bihar’s chief minister twice. The first time in 1970 ( with the Samyuktha Socialist Party) and the second time 1977 (with the Janata Party).
The implementation of a layered reservation system in Bihar Thakur’s one of the most popular work in those days. In his time, a 12 percent quota was allotted to members of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities, 8 percent each for Economically Backward Classes from among the OBCs and upper castes, and 3 percent for women.
But according to RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari, “The BJP was verbally abusing him [Karpoori Thakur] while he was alive and did not remember him for 9 years. Our party and leader Lalu Yadav were demanding Bharat Ratna for him continuously. Now that elections are near, they are remembering Karpoori Thakur and awarded him the Bharat Ratna. They are remembering him for votes.”
