Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted bail in a case linked to the city’s liquor policy. His lawyer argued the Enforcement Directorate (ED) lacked evidence against him. According to news agency ANI, the ED plans to appeal the trial court’s decision in the Delhi High Court tomorrow.
Kejriwal got freed from the Delhi liquor case?
Kejriwal, who heads the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is expected to be released from jail tomorrow, pending the bail order’s delivery to the prison. His lawyer told the court that the ED’s case relied on statements from individuals who had turned approver, implying they were not credible witnesses. The court rejected the ED’s request for extra time to challenge the bail.
“The statements are from people who admitted guilt, not exactly saints. Some were promised bail and pardon,” Kejriwal’s lawyer said earlier. The court eventually announced bail around 8 pm after considering these arguments. The case revolves around allegations that Kejriwal received funds from liquor sellers, supposedly for AAP’s Goa campaign. The ED arrested him on money laundering charges related to the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy, which was scrapped due to concerns raised by the Lieutenant Governor.
Kejriwal’s lawyer disputed the ED’s claim that funds came from a ‘South Group’ in Telangana, calling it unsubstantiated. The lawyer argued that tainted individuals’ statements lacked credibility and did not prove guilt. The controversy has sparked debates over political funding and the scrutiny of policies affecting the national capital. As Kejriwal awaits his release, the case continues to unfold amid ongoing legal battles and public interest. “The statements are of those people who have confessed to being guilty. They are not saints here. They are those who are not only tainted, but it appears that some who were arrested were given a promise of bail and a promise of being granted a pardon. Approvers. And there is another category who have not been arrested,” Mr Kejriwal’s lawyer had said earlier today.
