The president People’s Democratic Party, known as PDP, Mehbooba Mufti was put under house arrest on Monday. The house arrest has been done under the Supreme Court’s verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution. That constitution conferred a special status on Jammu and Kashmir.
On December 11, The Supreme Court confirmed the decision of the central government to repeal special status for Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. The Supreme Court has set a deadline of September 30, 2024, for the assembly elections to be held. Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that Article 370 was meant to be temporary.
After that, PDP’s president Mehbooba Mufti claimed, that the political leaders in the state including herself were under house arrest.
Speaking to media reporters through video conferencing, she said, “Today J&K was converted into a jail, and all the shopkeepers were directed that they will not open their shops before 10 am. We were under house arrest. We should not be disheartened. J&K has seen several ups and downs. SC’s verdict stating Article 370 was a temporary provision, is not our defeat, but the defeat of the idea of India. I want to say this to the people of the country that many of you are celebrating this (verdict). We will not leave this, we have to come together and fight…”
“Even before Supreme Court judgment is pronounced, police has sealed the doors of the residence of PDP president @MehboobaMufti and put her under illegal house arrest,” the party said in a post on X.
However, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has called this whole claim completely baseless.
