The process of rescuing the 41 workers who were trapped inside the under-construction Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi started on Tuesday evening, has now been completed. Rat-hole mining experts manually drilled through the last 10- 12-metre stretch of debris of the collapsed portion of the under-construction tunnel on the Char Dham route and cleared it. Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi a portion under-construction tunnel from the Silkyara end caved in on November 12 trapping 41 workers. The workers have been trapped since then.
The workers trapped in the tunnel have been waiting for rescue for the past 16 days. At first, they drilled through a 60-meter stretch of collapsed tunnel debris, using techniques like horizontal drilling with an auger machine. But things didn’t work out in a good way, the machine didn’t work properly. The rescue team then started vertical drilling from the tunnel’s top. The authorities transitioned to manual drilling using rat-hole mining techniques to clear the last 10 meters of debris. Finally today, the trapped workers are rescued.
Ambulances were positioned at the tunnel’s entrance, absolutely ready to transport the rescued workers as soon as they emerged from the steel chute. A medical facility also had been set up inside the tunnel to conduct health assessments for the rescued workers as soon as possible. After their evacuation, the health department has prepared eight beds for immediate care, and a team of doctors and specialists is on standby in case of any complications.
Before rescuing them, the Indian Government had stated yesterday that the trapped workers are safe and are receiving the required medical help from psychologists and doctors along with food, fruits, medicines, anti-depressants, and multivitamins.
