Aadhaar card is not a valid document to determine age: Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court has said that Aadhaar is not a document to determine age. The apex court on Thursday set aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court order which had accepted Aadhaar card for determining the age of a road accident victim for granting compensation.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Ujjal Bhuiyan said that the age of the deceased should be determined from the date of birth mentioned in the school leaving certificate. The bench further said, the Unique Identification Authority of India through its circular no. 8/2023 has stated that while Aadhaar card can be used to establish identity, it is not a proof of date of birth.

The top court upheld the decision of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), which had calculated the age of the deceased on the basis of his school leaving certificate. The top court was hearing an appeal filed by the relatives of a man who died in a road accident in 2015.

The student gets admission in another school on the basis of leaving certificate

School leaving certificate is a formal document that certifies that a student has completed a particular level of education from a particular institution. This certificate shows the name of the institution and the level of studies completed by the student. On the basis of this the student gets admission in other schools.
