Multiple social media platforms have been shut down in Bangladesh. The Sheikh Hasina government has implemented this decision from August 2. Access to Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, and YouTube has been restricted since Friday.
What is the reason behind this ban?
Incidentally, Bangladesh had erupted into a student movement demanding quota reform in government jobs. Hundreds of lives were lost. Due to this violent movement, Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, and other social media were closed once before. After being closed for about 15 days, those social media platforms became active again on 28th July. But after five days the government has officially banned these to restrict the situation.
Earlier, on the night of 17th July, Bangladesh mobile internet and 18th July Band internet service was stopped. Later various social media sites were closed. Finally, from 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 28, 2018, the virtual internet service was launched across the country. Then various social media including WhatsApp started coming into existence. Common people got relief. But then this announcement left the people of the country in a dire shock.
