A fatal and terrible earthquake hit Nepal! India’s neighboring countries were shaken late on Friday night. The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 on the Richter scale. The survivors described that sudden shaking started at midnight followed by houses collapsing and burying entire families. The death toll rose to 157 on Saturday.
Earthquakes are somewhat common in mountainous country Nepal. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 killed more than 9,000 people and damaged about 1 million structures there.
Again another fatal earthquake hit Nepal. the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 11 miles (18 kilometers). Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Centre said its epicenter was at Jajarkot, which is about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of the capital, Kathmandu. Nepal experienced additional aftershocks, with a magnitude of 3.3, on Saturday afternoon.
The government is trying to get aid to the affected areas, Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha said. Tents, food, and medicine were flown in as thousands became homeless overnight. While rescuers were scrambling to rush aid, operations were hampered by the fact that many of the mountainous villages could only be reached by foot.
Besides aid, rescuers were focused on finding survivors. Local television aired footage of troops recovering bodies while others helped dig out and carry the injured. A video has surfaced from Jajarkot, Nepal. The rescue team present in this video is carrying out the rescue operation of a woman buried under the debris. The woman was buried under the debris of the house for 9 hours. When the rescue team reached, the woman was rescued after hearing her voice.
The government said more than 375 people had been injured and more than 200 people are dead. Officials added that the toll was expected to rise, noting that communications were cut off in many places in the Himalayan country. Jajarkot’s hospital was packed with wounded people. “We were sleeping. We felt like dying,” says Laxman Pun, an earthquake survivor. “Houses have collapsed. People rushed out of their homes. I am out in the crowd of terrified residents,” said a police official from the region.
The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing 22 people, this is the deadliest incident on the mountain. The earthquake triggered another huge avalanche in the Langtang Valley, where 250 people were reported missing.
INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and damage caused by the powerful earthquake. He wrote “Deeply saddened by loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery.”
