Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has been cleared of extortion charges, but he will continue to be investigated for racketeering. The Special Investigation Team of Punjab Police has filed a cancellation report in the Mohali court to cancel the case registered against gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
The investigation team has said that in the case registered in connection with the second TV interview allegedly given from Rajasthan jail, there is no evidence that Bishnoi had committed extortion. He has also been acquitted of the charge of hiding information from the police during the investigation.
Lawrence was involved in criminal threats
The investigation by Special DGP Prabodh Kumar and DIG Nilambari Vijay Jagdale stated that Lawrence was involved in criminal intimidation, but it was a non-cognizable offence. In March 2023, a TV channel aired two back-to-back interviews of the gangster.
On the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, two FIRs were registered in connection with the interviews on January 5 this year. Regarding the first interview, the same SIT found that it was conducted in the custody of Kharar police. After which the SIT recommended action against several police officers.
SAD leader Bikram Majithia raised questions
After acquitting Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi of extortion charges, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia has attacked the Punjab government. In a post shared on his official account, he criticized the AAP government for the investigation report which gave a clean chit to thegangster.
