The massive earthquake happened around 8am according to the local time and 1pm NZ time in Taiwan. This huge earthquake caused collapsing of many buildings in a southern city and for this reason tsunami alerts also have been notified for southern Japanese islands. At least one person is dead and nearly 60 injured got injured On Wednesday by this powerful earthquake in Taiwan. It has damaged dozens of buildings and that’s why prompted tsunami warnings has been extended to Japan and the Philippines before being lifted.
Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency has given the magnitude as 7.2 but the US Geological Survey put it at 7.5. The depth of the quake was about 35 km from the surface. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JAMA) has revised the magnitude again and it went to 7.7, up from 7.5 which is the strongest quake that has strike the Island in 25 years.
Tsunami warnings and sirens have been activated in southern part. The government is urging the residents to evacuate immediately. Though, there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand, the National Emergency Management Agency said. Some camera footages and photos shared on social media, showed buildings in the eastern city of Hualien shaken off their foundations, a multi-storey building with businesses and apartments has partially collapsed, a bridge was seen to be shaking too.
Officials has confirmed that the earthquake came with a series of strong aftershocks and every one of those was the strongest among the quakes that have shaked the island in decades, and the government has warned of more tremors in the days ahead. “The earthquake is close to land and it’s shallow. It’s felt all over Taiwan and offshore islands,” said Wu Chien-fu who is the director of Taipei’s Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center.
